Daphne Kelley, California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS)

What do you enjoy most about working as a Loaned Executive on the OP campaign?

This has been an incredible experience.  To have the opportunity to learn about the many nonprofits and realize how much they help so many of our local communities and share this information with family, friends and co-workers has been a life-changing experience.

How long have you been involved in or volunteered with the campaign?

When I started as a Loaned Executive in July this was my first involvement in the Our Promise campaign.

What inspires you to give through the campaign?

I knew there were many nonprofits but not to the extent of the countless categories and causes.  To actual see and realize that some nonprofits do not receive any federal grants/funding and are completely dependent on donations has been an eye-opening experience and has given me a greater appreciation for the Our Promise campaign.

What nonprofits do you donate time or funds to, and why?

  • W.E.A.V.E. – I had the opportunity to speak with some women who were subjected to battered woman’s syndrome and they discussed with me why they stayed in abusive relationships and I also got to talk to women who served time in prison for killing their abuser.  These conversations have always stayed with me so that is why I have donated to W.E.A.V.E. for the past 20 years.
  • Goodwill – My parents have been donating to Goodwill as long as I can remember so I donated to Goodwill out of habit but eventually I realized that donating to Goodwill not only helps individuals and families who are facing life challenges but helps people with job skills training.

Any other comments you’d like to add?

The Our Promise team is so awesome.  The teamwork, the professionalism and their friendly personalities made being a first time Loaned Executive a very positive experience.
